Open House a Huge Success

US Watercraft open house in Warren RI

USWatercraft welcomed more than 200 guests to the Open House held at its Rhode Island factory in early March. Visitors included owners of boats built by USWatercraft, as well as new customers, journalists, industry friends, and local residents curious about the bustling 100,000-sq.ft-factory in their town. USWatercraft builds four boating brands: Alerion Yachts, True North Yachts, North Rip Boats and C&C Yachts.

Tours of the production floor were the highlight of the day. Members of the USWatercraft engineering and production teams guided visitors through the factory, explaining the high-tech process used to manufacture both sailing yachts and powerboats. The tour began with a look at the raw materials (such as fiberglass cloth and core materials) and the myriad of molds used to create the hulls and decks. Next was an explanation of the resin-infusion process and a look at a True North 38 hull in the process of being infused.

Every hull produced by USWatercraft is built using resin-infusion, the gold standard for producing strong, lightweight, and consistent fiberglass hulls. The process begins with materials laid up in a precision mold, followed by vacuum-bagging. The vacuum pulls and distributes a precise amount of liquid resin into the lay-up of fiberglass and core materials. The vacuum pressure also compresses the materials, removing any trapped air. The result is an efficient, repeatable process that results in very high quality parts.

US Watercraft open house in Warren RIThe tour also included a walk down the production line, where three Alerion 28s, an Alerion 41, and two new Alerion Sport 30s were seen in various stages of finish. The final stop was the extensive carpentry shop, where everything from interior woodwork and furniture to teak decks are produced both by hand and with the assistance of CNC machining.

“People ask great questions, and they’re very interested in what we do here,” says TJ Perrotti, Senior Naval Architect and Chief Design Engineer for USWatercraft, who led many of the day’s tours. “It gives our owners tremendous confidence to meet the people behind the construction of their boat, and to see that everything is built right here in Rhode Island to the highest standards.”

Visitors were also treated to a look at nine finished yachts, representing each of the company’s brands. This included the two newest launches – the Alerion Sport 30 sailing yacht and the North Rip 30 center console fishing boat. Also on view were the Alerion 41, Alerion 28, and Alerion 20 sailboats, the C&C 30 One Design racing sailboat, the True North 34 Outboard Express and True North 38 powerboats, and the North Rip 21 center console.

“Everyone at USWatercraft is incredibly proud of the boats we build,” says Randy Borges, President and founder of USWatercraft. “It’s exciting to give our customers a behind-the-scenes look at everything that goes on here, and to introduce them to all of our brands. Some people know us for our sailboats, and others for powerboats; the Open House is a chance for us to show off our skill in building and servicing both.”

USWatercraft began as the service company Waterline Systems in 1988. The USWatercraft name was added in 2000 when the company began building boats, first as a licensed builder of J/Boats. USWatercraft purchased and began building the Alerion and True North brands in 2012, C&C Yachts in 2014 and North Rip in 2015. (Waterline Systems remains as the service arm of the company) USWatercraft employs 75 of the most highly skilled and experienced boatbuilding staff in New England.

USWatercraft Open House 2016

Join us on March 5, 2016 when USWatercraft opens the doors of our Rhode Island factory for a behind-the-scenes look at the unique combination of high-tech construction and master craftsmanship that goes in to the build of each of our extraordinary brands. On March 5, visitors can take a guided tour of our factory and learn about our process, meet our team of boatbuilding experts, and ask questions one-on-one with our customer service team.

As the builders of True North Yachts, Alerion Yachts, C&C Yachts, and North Rip Boats, we produce luxury power and sail brands, as well as grand-prix racing sailboats and dedicated sportfishing boats. While very different boats in purpose, they share a common denominator – each hull is built to exacting standards, using the high-tech, efficient resin-infusion construction process for which we are known. The result is the highest level of performance for its designed purpose. You will also visit our carpentry shop, where modern CNC machining meets old-world craftsmanship, resulting in some of the most beautiful interior work available.

Tours run every half hour, with the last tour starting at 3:00pm. Finished yachts are also on display throughout the day, and several of our industry partners will also showcase their latest products.

In addition, you can enter to win a one-day fishing charter on Narragansett Bay aboard the North Rip 30, led by Captain Jack Sprengel of East Coast Charters.

The Alerion Sport 30 – Designed for Performance

AlerionSport30The tall rig and powerful sail plan are the first things you notice about the new Alerion Sport 30. Not so obvious, but equally important to its “sport” performance, are the design and construction of the keel and rudder.  Both were engineered in-house by T.J. Perrotti, Senior Naval Architect and Chief Design Engineer for USWatercraft, builder of the Alerion yachts.

“The sail area to displacement ratio is higher for the size of the boat than on other Alerion models,” says Perrotti. “We needed enough stability to counteract the powerful sailplan, so this keel is deeper and full at the tip, in order to achieve high righting moment.” The fin keel gives the Alerion Sport 30 a 5-foot draft, and also boasts a unique shape. “It’s not a bulb keel,” says Perrotti. “The shape is more sculpted at the bottom to reduce drag, with a swept tip aft to shed flow. Overall, the effect is to reduce drag and improve efficiency.”

keel_rudderIn addition, the Alerion Sport 30 has a high-aspect ratio rudder, which is also deeper than what you find on our other models. Again, this makes the appendage more efficient, helping the boat move through the water faster.

Sport30_keel“We sculpted the hull to include a subtle, local flat region that accommodates the top of the rudder,” Perrotti says. “The top of the rudder is very close to the hull, which helps flow when sailing in a straight line.” Perrotti worked closely with the team at Jefa Rudder Systems, getting the section shape just right, and also chose their ultra-high strength stainless steel rudder stock and self-aligning bearings to connect the rudder to the boat. “The self-aligning bearings mean that, as the rudder loads up, the bearings adapt to any bend in the rudder, and there’s essentially no friction in the system. You’ll have a consistent feel in the helm in all conditions.”

All of this attention to detail adds up to emphasize the “sport” in the performance of the Alerion Sport 30. Stay tuned; next we’ll bring you observations from the lucky sailors participating in our sea trials.

Alerion Sport 30 Review

With the official launch now just days away, we’re pleased to bring you Bob Perry’s review of the Alerion Sport 30 for Sailing magazine. He hits the nail on the head when discussing the boat’s daysailer versus racing qualities: “It’s not about tenths of a knot. It’s about painting that picture of yourself on the water on a boat that reflects your personal approach to yachting.” Indeed. The Alerion Sport 30 has the traditional beauty of all Alerion yachts while adding high-tech features, such as the carbon bowsprit, that make modern sailing so enjoyable.

We’re happy to note that it is offered with either tiller or wheel steering.

Why I Love the Alerion Express 28

Recently, US Watercraft’s Sydney Borges sat down with Alerion owner Captain Patrick Evans to talk to him about his Alerion Express 28, Sundance.

SB: Thank you, Captain Evans, for agreeing to talk to me today. Tell me, how did you learn about the Alerion Express 28?

Capt. Evans: Well, I suppose I was like most people who fell in love with an Alerion. I was crewing on someone else’s, saw how nicely it sailed and tacked, and decided that I just had to get one of my own. I’ve sailed on a lot of different boats; growing up, my dad and I would buy old, rundown wooden sailboats, fix them up and sell them to make a profit. We owned and worked on a lot of different boats, and to me the Alerion 28 is one of the best boats of them all.

SB: Why do you say that?

Capt. Evans:  I have owned five sailboats, and the Alerion is completely unique. No matter where I go people will comment on how pretty she is. On my Alerion 28, I put carbon fiber sails. I love how they make my boat stand out.  I go to concerts, restaurants, etc., in my boat, and everywhere I go people love to watch her sailing. I don’t even own a power boat anymore, I got rid of it because I love the Alerion so much. If I need to power somewhere, the Alerion has a motor and I can use that. In addition to her beauty, she is a wonderful boat to sail. Whenever I take friends out on my Alerion, they can’t help but comment on how well she handles: she turns on a dime and is super reactive to the touch. Personally, I think that the best thing about the Alerion 28 is that you can solo sail her and she can go wing-on-wing.

SB: Why do you love racing you Alerion 28 so much?

Capt. Evans: Racing Alerions … it creates a bond. When you race an Alerion you create bonds with the other sailors. You get to know them and you are part of an awesome community.

SB: Tell me about a time you were most proud to be an Alerion owner.

Capt. Evans: Well, I race a lot and one time I was out in the middle of a race when a huge storm came in.  The wind was blowing 35 knots and all around me boats were flipping and spinnakers were shredding. It was intense; they had to send out rescue teams. However, even in all of this, the only reason we couldn’t finish the race on the Alerion 28 was because the buoy blew away. If the buoy had still been there we would have been able to finish the race. At 35 knots the Alerion 28 was still in the race and going fast. I love the Alerion because it’s such a safe boat.

SB: What do you most enjoy about your Alerion 28?

Capt. Evans: I love the fact that she can go wing-on-wing; it makes her a dangerously competitive boat. If the wind is blowing above 7 knots, she’s a racehorse and she just takes off. I recommend that everyone race an Alerion. It’s an excellent boat to race and you don’t have to be eighteen to sail it. I grew up racing and I loved it, but then I had a family and stopped racing as much. After the kids got older, I wanted to start racing again and the Alerion 28 was perfect for that. In most of the races I sail, the guys are 50+. One guy is turning 90 this year and he still races his Alerion!

SB: I hear that you have a very special Alerion.

Capt. Evans: Yes, my boat is actually really unique. Her name is Sundance, hull number 45, and I bought her from New Orleans and restored her. The interesting thing about my Alerion is that she was the prototype Alerion 28 for the jib boom. The very first Alerion 28’s with jib booms were made in 1997 but Sundance was made in 1995 as the prototype and she sails just beautifully. Last year, I won the Messmer Cup with her, and this year I won the Bud Light Regatta hosted by Marco Island.

Sydney: Thank you, Captain Evans, for your time. Do you have any closing comments you would like to add?

Capt. Evans: The Alerion 28 is a unique product. She is safe, beautiful and fast. Sail with anyone and they’ll tell you that they love her. She’s the best.

This year USWatercraft Rendezvous landed on a beautiful Saturday, it was so sunny that we even believe that spring is coming!  Our day was jam-packed with six wonderful speakers and eighteen key industry partners on display.  We had around 400 visitors for the day.  The day began with Cruising World’s Mark Pillsbury awarding, USW President Randy Borges with the 2014 Boat of the Year Award for the exquisite Alerion 41.  Our guests experienced guided facility tours, watched the CNC machine cut the plug for the C&C 30 rudder, and they viewed both finished boats and boats in progress.  Specifically, we displayed the award-winning Alerion 41 along with an Alerion 20, 28, and 33.  There was both a True North 34 and 38 under construction and a completed TN 38 on display.  We showed off the brand new C&C 30 and the Redline 41, both still under construction, but well on their way to completion.  Additionally, we also displayed a J/100 in production and our newest J/24: Blind Squirrel – rumors are she is making a comeback!

Andrew Burton

This year we managed to wrangle in some fantastic speakers to appeal to our various customers, guests, and friends.  Our first seminar was with experienced sailing expert, Andrew Burton from Andrew Burton Yacht Services to discuss offshore passage making.  Andrew has logged over 300,000 sea miles aboard yachts and commercial craft; he reviewed what to discuss when sailing offshore and being mentally prepared for sea.

Joel Rumelhart

Next up was Joel Rumelhart from Power Products, our New England Volvo Penta Marine Power Center.  Joel discussed the new Volvo IPS technology and the glass cockpit system as it pertains to the new True North 50.

David Winskowicz

Following Joel, we had David Winskowicz & Mike Alfano from Mack Boring/ Yanmar.  Together, they presented on the latest in diesel technology for sailboats as well as powerboats and covered the maintenance and daily care of marine engines

Tom Degremont & Sam Howell

The afternoon sessions were as equally well attended as the morning sessions.  Tom Degremont and Sam Howell from Langan Design Partners kicked off the afternoon to discuss all things considered when designing a luxury power yacht, including how to maintain the integrity of modern design while staying true to the brand’s identity.  In this presentation, they updated the crowd on the current status of the new True North 50.

Rob Mazza
Rob Mazza

Our next speakers certainly traveled the furthest to attend our event.  We are fortunate to have had both Rob Mazza and Mark Mills speak about the history of C&C Yachts, past and present.  Rob Mazza, of the original C&C Design Group drove down from Ontario, Canada to visit us, and Mark Mills, current C&C designer, made his way across the Atlantic all the way from Ireland.  Both designers discussed the evolution of C&C Yachts over the years, leading to its recent modern incarnation.

Mark Mills

They spoke about what made C&C Yachts a success in past sailing markets, and how those same qualities are equally successful for C&C in the 21st Century.

Charlie Enright
Charlie Enright

The grand finale of the presentations was local sailor, Charlie Enright, to discuss his future as the youngest skipper for the 2014-2015 Volvo Ocean Race on Team Alvimedica.  Charlie began his offshore career aboard Disney’s sponsored TP52 Morning Light.  Now at age 29, he faces his next challenge racing around the world.  In this seminar, Charlie discussed the race, the boats, and how the crew has gotten to this stage as the youngest team to contend in the event.

Many thanks to all of our guests, and to our phenomenal speakers and to our reliable industry partners.  Please come again next year!  All photo credits to John Cratin Photography.

Alerion Yachts, Internationally Known

BlueBonnetPeople certainly love Alerions, and we certainly love to ship them anywhere they need to be.

In December of 2013, we shipped our first Alerion 20 to USYachts and Customs Inc., our dealer in Japan. This may be the first Alerion 20 to Japan, but by no means the first Alerion. Over the years, this dealer has received and sold several Alerion 28s and 33s.

This spring we will be sending an Alerion 28 with a shoal draft keel (shown) all the way to Germany. There are Alerions sprinkled throughout Canada, Europe, one in Chile, and one lucky Alerion 33 Sport made her way to Australia!

Don’t let your geographic location limit you from Alerion Sailing, they travel anywhere.
